The Writing Life - Where are we now?

Author Update

At 30,000 words in I left my work in progress, Servants of the Legacy, alone for about a week. It wasn't intentional. I recently experienced several unrelated tragedies in my family and that, combined with a very hectic schedule left me short on both imagination and time.

To be honest, as I made my morning coffee today, I wasn't sure if I was yet redy to continue. Then, like a bolt from the blue, it hit me! An expected plot twist that will change the entire outcome of this book came to me from whatever hidden force places these stories in my head and coerces my hands to commit them to an empty page.

It's always exciting when these things happen and I am now busting at the seams to complete this book.

Once Servants hits the shelves, it will be on to the next and what an exciting next step it will be! The Wisdom of Coyotes is selling very well so it's only right for me to get the next installment underway.

Part two is nothing more than an idea brewing in the dark recesses of my psyche, but it's working title is, The Rise of the Queen, and I've been putting together some ideas for the cover art.

My plan is to end Wisdom with three installments. Only time will tell if three is enough to complete the journey of Jimmy Blackfeather.

Still more to come!

There are still more works simmering on the back burner. The X Collective will come after Wisdom II. This is my WIP about a hoard of zombies who learn through a collective intelligence until their overwhelming hunger for flesh and superior intellect cause them to evolve in to a super predator.

Then, perhaps, Wisdom III or my fun little novella entitled, "Hathor - The Many Lives of a Mystical Cat". This work follows the adventures of the mystical feline familiar of Mrs, Doris Dean in the first Not Forgotten Book - Lilly's Story.

So, expect a very eclectic collection to come in the near future. As always, you're welcome to sign up for my mailing list. You will receive monthly updates and a quarterly bonus story written exclusively for members!

WIP - Servants of the Legacy Update

As of this moment Servants of the Legacy is 12, 687 words and I must admit, it was a labor in the beginning. I'll chalk that up to the idea that this book wasn't finished marinating when I started trying to put it to paper. I put it aside and completed a separate work, The Wisdom of Coyotes, and then went back to it and a fire was lit. My ideas were more fluid and so easy to translate from my head to the page! I fully believe that this is going to be one of my favorites to write!

Coincidence or Divine Intervention

There is an odd thing that happens to fiction writers. Sometimes, when you begin laying out a story, you uncover knowledge that you never knew you possessed. This happened to me a lot while writing Zac's Guitar.

I knew that I wanted to write about a boy and a magic guitar. What I didn't expect was to uncover a plausible connection between Theoretical Physics (String Theory) and my magic guitar. Consciously, I knew nothing about String Theory but I saw something on television that captured my attention and prompted me to do some research. When I did, I found that this story that I had been writing not only needed String Theory, but it had the right character to develop this connection and was written as if it had always been my intention to include it.

Now, I'm working on Servants of the Legacy. My first step was to work on some character creation. After thirteen years and five books that included the Highgate Paranormal Research Society, coming up with new characters would be a challenge.

My process usually involves making a list of names with a short biography, explaining their place in the book, and giving them a home location.

The second character that I listed was a young man named Danny who was from Alaska. I didn't know why he was from Alaska. In my mind, he just was. Weeks later, while doing research on Nazca, Peru for the book, I stumbled upon a diagram that looked like the one below:

So, I'm writing a book about aliens on Earth and I "randomly" select Alaska as the home of one of my characters, then discover that two of the mysterious ancient locations from the book are geographically and geometrically connected to Alaska. These are sites where ancient alien theorists believe aliens existed and imparted wisdom upon mankind. They believe the Nazca lines were left behind by alien visitors.

Now, I'm left wondering if this is a coincidence. Did I see this diagram before and simply forget about it until I needed it for my work? I don't recall ever hearing about this connection before.

The writing process is truly an amazing and magical thing!

Servants of the Legacy

Strange things are happening on Earth in the year 2030. A solar event has taken a toll on the planet's resources and the future appears dim for human kind. As the scientific community searches for solutions, a group of unrelated, ordinary people begin having bizarre experiences.

* Edward, a middle aged farmer whose crops are failing stumbles into a crop circle and telepathically connects with an other worldly intelligence

* Danny, an Alaskan kid whose future is uncertain experiences a close encounter and awakens with a working knowledge of a groundbreaking technology

* Renee, a multiple abductee and Travis Cloud, a Hollywood A-lister are abducted and returned with altered DNA

* Max, a computer programmer and Jason, a conspiracy theorist bear witness to a great discovery

*Roman Demaris, an archaeologist, opens a hidden chamber in the Great Pyramid of Giza and finds that the walls inside are covered with a message written in computer code

*Antonio Perelli, a billionaire with his own space program, sees a link between these people and brings them together

In the year 2030, when man is facing likely extinction, he looks up at the stars and wonders, is there a place for us out there? Perhaps we aren’t the first intelligent life to determine that the best way to fulfill our biological imperative is to plant our seed on a distant star.

We are given the blue print used to introduce life to a barren planet. It's the blue print that was used to bring life to our planet and others before it. Now, it's our turn to serve this legacy.

Works in Progress

I am currently working on TWO books! I am writing the first and outlining the second. These will be the first fiction books that I've written in more than 13 years that fall outside the Not Forgotten Universe. It's an odd feeling for a writer when your characters from five books go on hiatus!

First: Servants of the Legacy

Our time on Earth is ending. Based on current projections, the earth will face a global failing of resources over the next 50 years and we need to find another place to call home. As the governments of the world work in secret to find a solution, ordinary citizens from all over the world begin having bizarre experiences and an astounding discovery is made in Egypt. When these seemingly unrelated events are reviewed simultaneously, they begin to tell a story. A story of our future survival. But who sent this message and why?

Second: The X Collective

You may think you have what it takes to survive a zombie outbreak but you've never met these zombies. The collective referred to as X develops and survives with a hive mentality. Th experiences of one become the memories of all and as a result, they learn. The X collective is a super predator and mans biggest nightmare.
